CHALLENGES IN TEACHING DYSLEXIC STUDENTS: A TEACHER EXPERIENCE STUDY IN TETOVO MUNICIPALITY

Ajshenur IZETI ZEJNELI

Abstract

This qualitative exploratory study addresses both the challenges and needs of primary and secondary teachers in Tetovo Municipality to teach children with dyslexia. Based on semi-structured interviews with 15 teachers, the findings of the study point to low levels of understanding of dyslexia since most teachers had little familiarity with it which was acquired in an informal manner rather than at university or through in-service courses. The results emphasize the following problem areas: identification and diagnostics of dyslexia, lack of adapted teaching methods and resources, high workload, and cooperation with parents, as well. Teachers stressed their urgent need to receive practical and comprehensive training on dyslexia, the use of assistive technology as well as psycho-pedagogical support in school. The study also emphasises teachers’ preoccupation for the possible negative consequences that dyslexia entails both on academic achievements and on students’ psychological and social status. The results point to the necessity of systemic interventions at the local and national level, promotion in teacher training curricula and favorable policies.
