MULTICULTURALISM AND MULTILINGUALISM IN SWITZERLAND - A CASE FOR REFLECTION ON NORTH MACEDONIA

Abstract
In contexts where ethnic and linguistic identities often serve as sources of tension in multiethnic states, the Swiss model of multilingualism and multiculturalism provides a valuable example of managing diversity through democratic and inclusive institutions. This paper analyzes how Switzerland has developed a sustainable system of linguistic and cultural coexistence through its federal structure, official language equality, and multilingual education. The study examines whether and to what extent this model can be adapted to the context of North Macedonia, a country with a diverse ethnic composition and a politically sensitive history regarding language.
The analysis indicates that certain elements of the Swiss model, such as the decentralization of language policies, multilingual education, and interethnic dialogue, could be gradually adapted in North Macedonia to strengthen social cohesion and democratic participation. The research is based on scholarly literature and legal documents and offers critical reflections on the transferability of multilingual models, providing valuable lessons for inclusive language policies.
